Kite flying

Today’s piece is about kite flying. Growing up in Mumbai seeing kites flying was a common sight certain times of the year. Since kites were made of paper and water was a dampener for threads used to fly the kites wet weather months were ruled out. A bit of breeze help keep kite flying. Gujarat State in India has a tradition of flying kites to celebrate start of warmer weather after winter. Known as Uttarayan there and celebrated as harvest festival Makar Sankaranti in other parts of the country. Let’s dive into or rather soar into kite flying experience!

What is needed to fly kites? Apart from the kite a spool to wind and unwind the thread. Open space for the kite to take off. Blessings from weather and wind Gods also help the venture flying high 🙂

What are the keys to keep a kite flying high and straight? One key is the Y-shaped string knot from the kite to the spool. It has to be made in a way that ensures almost even weight distribution and prevent sway in any direction. Care also has to be taken to make sure that the holes in the kite are just small enough for the strings to pass around and not result in a slight tear that wind could enlarge and render the kite unflyable. Tying those knots used to be an art in itself back in the days. Once the string attached to the kite is tied to the spool string we are ready to fly when air traffic controllers of nature give the go ahead 😀

Anything to note about the spool and string? Spools for flying kites come with handles on either side for a person to hold it and wind/unwind fast without touching the string. That is very critical during aerial kite combat which I will come to later 😀 One person for flying and another person for handling the spool works better. As they say “Many hands make light work” 🙂 Strings can either be thin or a thicker twine. Thin strings make it easier to keep the kite flying while thicker twines need stronger wind to avoid gravitational pull down. Both have their own uses in combat missions 😉

Without a personal experience no story is complete. So, here we go! I tried kite flying at ground level in the open space of the building where we lived. Most times poor kite used to bang hard on the ground despite my best efforts to fly. In short it was more like someone attaching wings to their arms and hoping to fly by flapping their arms with prayer on their lips. Gravity is not a good ally for such endeavors unfortunately 😦 My admiration for the street cred of guys flying kites on the street went up several notches after my own experience. They would just get a person to hold the kite from a distance and after the holder let go of kite on gentle tug of string the street pros would get the kite flying with a few pulls seemingly effortlessly. All the while dodging overhead electrical cables, trees, buildings and other objects blocking the flight. My neighbor was an avid kite flyer and pretty good at it. So, I switched to caddying for him which meant I was the master spool handler while he could focus on flying and keeping air combatants at bay or defeat them in aerial battles. I guess he couldn’t have been Batman without me playing the role of Robin 😉 We graduated to take our kite flying adventures to building terrace. Height with wind blowing and no obstacles in the way helped the kites soar.

Aerial combat: What is life without a few battles, right? So it was during our kite flying adventures. We had to be on the lookout for those itching for a battle in the air. Sometimes it was mere flexing of muscles to mark their space. Other times the battles were for real, the entanglements thrilling and test of skill, nerve and power. Power as in heft of kite, supply of string, rapid reflexes to pull string rapidly or let go while the strings of each kite battled out for supremacy. At times more kite flyers would join in the battle either trying to assert their power or help out an ally kite flyer 🙂 The string type would determine the strategy used in battle situations. Kite flying strings usually had a coat of finely powdered glass. In thinner strings the density of glass was higher. This lent a thin, sharp blade-like effect if properly used. While battles involving thicker twines were more of battles of attrition with each side trying to wear out the other (usually battle ended when a weak point of string was reached OR a combatant ran out of string OR a string reached a point where it was knotted to another string to make it longer making the task of enemy easier to cut a stuck string rather than a freely moving string) if you had the thinner, sharper string wisdom lay in making a quick surgical strike rather than indulging in long drawn out battle. Reason being thinner strings could cut thicker twines like a hot knife running through butter (ok, that was an exaggeration but you got what I was trying to say 😀 ). If someone with fast reflexes could pull the thin string very rapidly it would have the effect of cutting the same portion of the opponent string very fast. You see, physics come in here (Pressure = Force / Area) and it’s the same effect as pin pricking a balloon while a heavier flat object not breaking the balloon. The Robin guy has to be prepared to wind and unwind rapidly as needed for Batman to win 🙂

Sidelights: It was quite a sight to see free flight of cut kites as the wind carried them before gravity had the final say and brought them down. The finder usually was the new owner. Nothing like a freebie as reward, right? 🙂 Many were my futile attempts to run after a cut kite and get it while or after it landed. Usually these battles were won by those who were faster, bigger and stronger like most other things in life 😦 But the reward was in trying. If a cut kite landed on a tree or on overhead cable that presented it owns challenges. Typically one would tie a small stone/pebble at the end of a string long enough to reach around the loose string of the cut kite and hope with weight of stone gravity would take care of bringing the kite down gentle enough for a soft landing, not to smash it on the way down. This task also required the precision of a surgeon 😀 Stone/pebble with enough weight to reach the required height and at the same ensuring stone did not directly hit and tear the kite!

Kite flying has been featured in some Bollywood movies too like the one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sdrn63ylsok

Summary: Kite flying is a pastime, it also holds a few life lessons
1) While many a effort starts with high hopes it takes sustained effort to keep the flag flying high
2) Life is about seeking a high in one form or another. Some seek it by flying kites, some by flying airplanes, some through music, some making money and so forth. I get mine by writing. What is thine way for a high?

Australia omelette

This morning’s breakfast turned into an Aussie revelation!
Final shape of omelette looked like aerial photo of Australia after the recent bushfires. Red and black portions appeared like areas affected by bushfires covering most of the country 😦 , rest of the mainland looked yellow due to dry grass 😦 Only Tasmania seemed less affected by fire 🙏

Great day for sports fans!

An incredible day for sports fans! A major winner in individual sport and Super Bowl champion in team sport. What more could any sports fan ask for?

Woke up this morning and read Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open Tennis tournament. Was too early to watch the match live. Had to be content reading the reports. After having watched live on earlier occasions Djokovic win a few majors and pull out victories in tight matches it came as no surprise he won despite trailing two sets to one in the match. Champions always find a way to win!

Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl later this evening led by Patrick Mahomes, their charismatic QB with never-say-attitude, oodles of talent and loads of confidence belying his age. The way he plays the sport it seems he plays the Super Bowl everyday. Watched this game live. In the fourth quarter, with his team trailing, Mahomes wanted to be in the thick of action while 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo wore an expression that looked like he would prefer to be anywhere else. Not to suggest that’s how he felt. Just that different people react different to pressure.

In both finals the eventual winner trailed well into the 2nd half of their matches and still found that something extra to up their game to win it. That’s what great champions do. When they are in tough situations they seize the moment, can win ugly and do enough to finish better. Just couple of major finals in sports and for the rest of us reality beckons tomorrow, there are more important things that matter in life. Tonight though sports is king and that is all that matters. At this moment 🙂

The best and worst

Consider this as one man’s viewpoint. I have always thought the best of women is always better than the best of men. Nothing in the best of men approaches the best qualities of women like kindness, generosity, empathy, appreciation, patience, selfless love. Women are also more tolerant of silliness. For example if I post something funny but silly most times women react in a positive way. Possibly it triggers in women memories of pranks of a sibling, child or someone they know and brings a smile. And of course The Raj is always willing to play the lovable rascal 😀 While men are always planning what to eat for their next meal women worry about more “mundane” tasks like putting food on the table and making sure children reach school on time and ensuring the kids have everything they need, be it food for lunch or books and stationery. Does that mean women are always better than mean? Not so soon, my friend 😀 It’s round one to the ladies!

There is always a flip side 🙂 The worst of women can be worse than the worst of men 😦 Qualities like envy, intense dislike can be more deep rooted in women than men. Not to say it’s absent in men. But the most scary trait appears to be women’s lesser ability to forget and let go. Ever faced a situation when you forget a special occasion? Am sure it’s now burned into memory never to be forgotten thanks to friendly reminders every now and then 😀 Why do men find it easier to forget and let go? Elementary, my dear Watson! 🙂 Men have more “important” things to worry about like supporting their favorite sports team, making sure they have the most comfortable part/position of a couch to watch TV when the team they support play while ensuring snacks and favorite drink/s are well stocked and easily available without moving an inch 😀 Everything else can wait 🙂 Can there ever be a more noble pursuit in life than that 😉

Ken Jennings is officially Jeopardy! GOAT 👏
In an increasingly fraught world, replete with natural and man-made disasters in recent times, it was good to see some things stay the same in a positive way. Way to go, champ!👌
Throughout the 4 days of the tournament the respect and admiration Ken, James and Brad have for legendary host Alex Trebek, for each other and the host for the three of them was in full evidence along with good-natured ribbing! 👍

Teaching Spanish

Son chose Spanish as foreign language to learn in school. Being multilingual is always useful especially in today’s world where it’s not uncommon to communicate with people from different parts of the world. I saw son was reading Spanish numbers. I volunteered to teach him. Only problem: I knew Spanish numbers from one to five only (uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco) having heard or come across those numbers in usage like numero uno, quattro (4-wheel drive) etc. Not wanting to put in the hard work of actually looking up what six to ten were in Spanish I decided to improvise 😀 So, six turned into sixo, seven into seveno,…, ten into teno in my Spanish version 🙂 I was in the zone and willing to go eleveno to hundredo too. Son had enough though as what I was saying and what he was seeing were totally different! He politely declined my offer to go any further. Anytime after that when I asked “Hey son, want to learn Spanish from me?” his standard response was “No thanks, I am good”. I wonder why 😉

Don’t blame me, blame all those 1-800 # that never use seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez as options to choose language of the call. If they had I would have scored a perfect ten, I mean perfecto diez 😀

Therapeutic value of dishwashing :)

Let me start with a confession: I don’t cook.
Now that the confession is out of the way time to talk about what I do: I prefer to do the dishes 🙂
Is there anything special about doing the dishes The Raj way? Yes, if you are The Raj 😉 Otherwise it is just a fancy way of describing a routine task 😀 Let’s get down to the details. Our current dishwasher has 3 racks, the top one is for cutlery, knives and other relatively flat objects used for cooking and eating. The bottom rack for the biggest dishes, pots and pans with a side basket for cutlery, the middle rack for beverage containers and room for smaller utensils. Yours truly likes to approach dishwashing as a problem solving exercise to be solved aesthetically, efficiently and completed in time before the next cooking cycle, which if it is Indian cuisine, can be quite involved. Now you know why I don’t cook 😀

Talking of aesthetics I like to see symmetry and balance. If I see dishes/utensils/cutlery arranged in a haphazard way my OCD-like tendencies kick into high gear 😀 In the bottom rack the eating plates have to be arranged in an order of increasing or decreasing size. If there are eating plates of same size with different patterns the order in which the plates go in will be determined by # of each plate type. Also not for me dumping of cutlery in one or two of the pockets of bottom rack basket. Justice has to be done to each pocket so that they carry similar load. Objects with sharp sides like cutting knives have to go flat in the top rack to minimize chance of accidentally cutting one’s finger while setting up for wash or when removing after the wash. Spatulas and other objects that are tall and flat also have to go to the top rack.

Moving on to efficiency the idea is make proper use of all the space available in the 3 racks and the cutlery basket. What does this mean? With a 3 rack dishwasher additional rack translates into lesser height for each individual rack as the overall dimensions remain the same as 2 rack models. So, one has to recognize the possibility of the rotating fan blades below the middle rack coming in contact with taller utensils or frying pans of greater circumference. One way to minimize it by placing those in the corners where the rotating blades can’t reach. Another thing I prefer to do is to have the pointed end/sharp side of forks and eating knives facing upwards in the dish basket of bottom rack. This is to avoid gravity and sharp sides/edges carve out a nice hole at the bottom of the plastic basket 🙂 The top rack cannot have objects bulging too much as there is a rotating fan over the top rack.

Getting dishes washed in time: In models with that are not entry level the heating coil has been replaced by a mechanism that is supposed to use the heat of the water at the bottom in a more efficient way reducing power consumption. While it makes the overall dishwashing quieter what it translates into practically is doubling up the time for entire wash cycle. What used to take 90 minutes max end to end now takes 190+ minutes of interminable wait. So, it’s better to start dishwashing prior to going to sleep.

Finally the therapeutic value of dishwashing: Doing the dishes brings its own sense of calm and relaxation. At night I can watch TV while setting them up. The process of arranging all the utensils is also akin to bringing different pieces of a solution together for one full working solution or assembling a jigsaw puzzle from pieces cluttered around. Removing the dishes the morning after the wash allows me to catch up on the weather and other news on TV briefly. Also lets me think of the tasks due at work for the day, resolution for issues in the calm of early morning after an overnight sleep. Of course before removing the clean and dry dishes they get an admiring look and yours truly self complimenting for successful project implementation 😀 The ultimate benefit of course is getting all the pots and pans and cutlery ready for wife to serve up piping hot, yummylicious food before leaving for work. For someone that doesn’t cook there can’t be a better reward 🙂
